Veterans
Veterans of the US Armed Services can benefit from a variety of ways to help pay for college as well as specific support services at many colleges.
BEFORE GOING
- Choose a college that’s a good fit. Confirm that the college or university is approved for veteran benefits.
- Get support. Contact a college’s Veterans Services Office to learn about support and student services available for veterans.
- Learn about education benefits. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the best source for information about all veterans education benefits. The VA Regional Education Office for Oregon may be able to assist with additional questions.
- In Oregon, eligible veterans have additional options to help pay for college, including the following:
Nonresident In-State Tuition
Veterans attending undergraduate programs at Oregon public colleges and universities pay in-state tuition, even when they aren’t yet permanent residents of the state. Graduate students pay reduced out-of-state tuition. Contact a college’s financial aid office for more information.
Voyager Tuition Assistance
Members of the Oregon National Guard or Reserves who served as active duty personnel in a combat zone on or after 9/11 may receive additional funds to pay for tuition and mandatory fees beyond their federal military benefits. Contact a college’s financial aid office for more information.
Statewide Apprenticeships
Veterans benefits can often be used for apprenticeship programs offered through the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries. When an apprenticeship site doesn’t have an approved program, veterans can help establish one by contacting the Apprenticeship and Training Division.
